Midsummer, Tobago
by Derek Walcott
Broad sun-stoned beaches.
~ ❇ ✾ ❈ ✾ ❇ ~
White heat.
A green river.
~ ❇ ✾ ❈ ✾ ❇ ~
A bridge,
scorched yellow palms
~ ❇ ✾ ❈ ✾ ❇ ~
from the summer-sleeping house
drowsing through August.
~ ❇ ✾ ❈ ✾ ❇ ~
Days I have held,
days I have lost,
~ ❇ ✾ ❈ ✾ ❇ ~
days that outgrow, like daughters,
my harbouring arms.
